Required Tools
Before starting the build, check that you have all the required tools:
- Soldering iron
- Soldering tin with rosin core
- TX10 (M3) Torx screw driver (a flat head will also work)*
- TX20 (M4) Torx screw driver (a flat head will also work)
- Cutting pliers
- Tweezers (normally closed recommended)
*A TX10 screwdriver is not required for the Scylla, TBK Mini, Skeletyl.
We also recommend the following tools:
- multimeter
- desoldering pump and/or solder wick (mistakes happen)
- spare flux
Also make sure to check the contents of the package carefully to make sure that everything is there.
Before you build: safety information
Our DIY kits need soldering. Read this whole page before you start. If anything is unclear, stop and email support@bastardkb.com.
Who can build this kit
Assembly is for adults aged 18 or older only. Do not let children solder or handle the tools. Keep the kit, tools and loose parts away from children and pets.
Set up your workspace
- Work on a stable, heat-resistant surface, in a well-ventilated room with good lighting
- Keep flammable items (paper, cloth, liquids) away from your work area
- Always rest the iron in its stand. Never leave it on and unattended
- Switch the iron off and let it cool fully before putting it away
- Tie back long hair and avoid loose sleeves
Protect yourself
- Wear safety glasses. Solder can splash and cut leads can fly off
- Cut component leads with flush cutters, and hold the lead or cover it so the clipped end doesn’t fly off
- Never touch the iron tip or freshly soldered joints. They stay hot for longer than you expect
- The PCB edges and trimmed leads can be sharp. Handle them carefully
Solder
- Use lead-free solder (RoHS compliant).
- Lead-free solder might need a higher iron temperature than leaded solder, so take extra care with burns
- Don’t breathe the fumes. Use a fume extractor or work near an open window
- Don’t eat, drink or smoke while soldering, and wash your hands when you finish
Small parts
Switches, keycaps, the trackball, screws and cut leads are small and can be a choking hazard. Keep them away from children and pets, and collect all trimmed leads when you’re done.
Before you plug it in
- Inspect every joint for solder bridges, loose strands or stray bits of solder
- Use a multimeter to confirm there is no short between 5V and GND
- Connect the keyboard directly to your computer’s USB port. Don’t plug in a board that looks damaged, smells hot or has any exposed solder bridges
- If anything gets unusually hot, smells, smokes or sparks, unplug it immediately and contact us
In case of injury
If you’re injured, seek medical help. For serious injuries, call your local emergency number.
